Parental Rights

Information for Parents, Families and Guardians

As a parent or guardian, you are the most important voice in your child's education. Texas law recognizes that students do best when families are informed, involved, and respected.

University of Texas High School Commitment to Families

The University of Texas High School is committed to partnering with parents and families throughout every student's educational journey. As an innovative online school serving students under 21 years of age across Texas and around the world since 1998, we believe that strong family engagement is essential to student success. We are committed to ensuring that parents have access to the information, resources, and opportunities they need to be actively involved in their child's education, regardless of their geographic location.

Senate Bill 12 Requirements

In accordance with Texas law, as outlined in Senate Bill 12 (PDF), the University of Texas High School is required to obtain written consent from parents/guardians for specific services and activities. This legislation ensures that parents are fully informed and give permission for the care and support provided to their students.

Important Note

In the event of a serious emergency, staff will continue to prioritize your child's safety and contact you immediately. Academic instruction, tutoring, and classroom guidance lessons are not affected by these consent requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Senate Bill 12 (SB12) and how does it affect my child?

SB 12 is a new Texas law that requires schools to obtain annual parental consent before providing certain routine physical or mental health services to students. This ensures parents are fully informed about services their child receives. Since UTHS is an online school, most traditional health services are not applicable, but counseling and support services may require consent.

How often do I need to give consent?

Consent requirements are typically annual. However, consent can be changed or revoked at any time by notifying the school in writing. Contact Student Services at (512) 232-5000 for specific consent procedures.

What services might require my consent?

Services that may require written consent include certain counseling services, participation in specific support programs, and any health-related assessments if applicable. Contact UTHS directly for detailed information about consent requirements for services your child may need.

How do I submit comments or concerns about school matters?

Contact UTHS administration directly through our main Student Services line at (512) 232-5000, toll-free at (866) 361-UTHS, or email edservices@austin.utexas.edu to share comments or concerns about school matters.

What if there's a student emergency or crisis?

UTHS maintains 24/7 protocols for student safety and crisis intervention. In serious emergencies, staff will always act to protect your child's safety and will contact you immediately, regardless of consent status. Emergency support is provided promptly when needed.

Where can I find more information about UTHS policies?
