EC23033
Course Description
This is the first course of a two-semester series. In Honors Algebra 1A, students write about and reflect on their learning while completing lessons with an emphasis on justifying claims, using multiple representations, and creating models to apply the concepts to authentic scenarios and careers. Primary topics in this course include linear equations and inequalities, functions, and systems. This course sets the foundation for Algebra 1B, as well as advanced courses such as Algebra 2 and Precalculus.
Course Objectives
Upon completing this course you will be able to:
- Graph, write, and solve linear equations, linear inequalities, and systems of linear equations and inequalities.
- Solve linear equations and inequalities with a variety of methods algebraically and with a graphing calculator
- Describe and interpret function behavior in appropriate notations
- Solve and apply systems of equations and inequalities
Required Course Materials
- Interactive Notebook – In the form of a small composition notebook, a spiral notebook, or loose-leaf paper kept in a binder.
- Pencil or Pen – In order to do well in the course, you must take notes, sketch diagrams and graphs, and solve problems when instructed to do so.
- Graphing calculator (TI-84 or similar is recommended)
Course Organization
Each semester contains 4 units and one final exam.
Each Unit contains:
- 4 lessons. Each lesson includes some or all of the following components: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate.
- Self-assessments to help you check your own understanding of the material covered in each lesson. You must complete these assessments in order to advance in the course.
- 3 graded assignments
Final Examination
The final examination is comprehensive; it covers the material from all 4 units.
- Format: Multiple-choice, online
- Time Allowed: 3 hours
Semester Topics
- Unit 1: Equations and Functions
- Unit 2: Linear Functions
- Unit 3: Systems of Equations
- Unit 4: Linear Inequalities
