Honors Algebra 2A

EC24003

Course Description

Algebra 2A is the first course in a two semester sequence of Algebra 2. This course will prepare you for PreCalculus and Statistics. In Algebra 2 you will add to your bank of function knowledge by further investigating quadratic functions and expanding to cubic, exponential, rational and higher order polynomial functions. You will learn additional techniques for solving equations of various degree, including square root equations.

In Honors Algebra 2A students reflect on their own learning as they study these concepts with an emphasis on justifying claims, using multiple representations, and creating models to apply the concepts to authentic scenarios and careers. This course also enables honors students to make their own choices during the learning process and on some assignments.

Course Objectives

Upon completing this course you will be able to:

  • Graph and describe the features of quadratic, exponential, rational, polynomial and power functions with various transformations
  • Solve equations using the algebraic methods of factoring, completing the square, method of square roots and rational exponents
  • Describe and interpret function behavior in appropriate notations
  • Solve logarithmic and exponential equations using the inverse relationship
  • Apply functions in real-world applications

Required Course Materials

  • Math Journal – In the form of a small composition notebook, a spiral notebook, or loose-leaf paper kept in a binder.
  • Pencil or Pen – In order to do well in the course, you must take notes, sketch diagrams and graphs, and solve problems when instructed to do so.
  • Purchasing a TI 84 plus, a TI 83 or similar is recommended.
  • Internet Access
  • Adobe Reader

Note: This course does not require a textbook.

Course Organization

Each semester contains 4 units and one final exam.

Each Unit contains:

  • 4 lessons. Each lesson includes some or all of the following components: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate.
  • Practice Quizzes to help you check your own understanding of the material covered in each lesson. You must complete these assessments in order to advance in the course.
  • 3 graded assignments

Final Examination

The final examination is comprehensive; it covers the material from all units. The exam consists of 68 multiple-choice questions.
