AP® Environmental Science A

Course Description

Advanced Placement® Environmental Science is a multidisciplinary course that ties together scientific principles from geology, chemistry, biology, geography, and Earth Science. It is designed to represent a one-semester introductory environmental science course. Students are expected to practice various scientific methodologies to examine, analyze, and interpret scientific evidence to propose and evaluate solutions to environmental problems.

Advanced Placement (AP®) courses are equivalent to college-level courses. We highly recommend that you read the College Board’s AP® Environmental Science Course Overview and AP® Environmental Science Course Description before beginning this course.

Course Objectives

Upon completing this course, you will be able to use scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to:

  • understand interrelationships of the natural world
  • identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made
  • evaluate risks associated with these problems
  • examine solutions for resolving them

Required Course Materials

Course Organization

This semester consists of:

  • 4 units with 3 – 6 lessons per unit
  • 16 Graded Assignments
  • 1 final exam

You must take and pass each semester’s final exam to receive credit for the course. After taking the semester B exam, you may take the AP® Environmental Science exam offered by the CollegeBoard, but it is not required to receive credit for the course from UT High School.

Final Examination

The final examination is comprehensive; it covers the material from all of the units. To pass the course, you must receive a grade of 70 percent or better. You can apply to take the Final Exam after 100 percent of your graded assignments have been submitted, and at least 70 percent have been graded and returned to you.

Format: Multiple-choice and short answer, online

Time Allowed: 3 hours
