When Paula Crites dropped out of high school, she was just half a credit short of graduating. Life’s challenges became the real obstacle to her diploma.
“I grew up in a very strict home and it came to a point where I could no longer live with my parents,” Paula shared. For the next few years, she moved between her parents’ home and friends’ homes, but those relationships became physically and mentally abusive.
Forty years passed quickly. Paula raised three daughters, all of whom graduated from high school and attended college. One daughter has already earned her bachelor’s degree.
Despite her accomplishments as a mother, Paula always wanted to be a high school graduate. She discovered the UT High School Empower Academy through a local magazine ad. “I called to make sure I qualified for the program, and I did,” she said.
Launched in spring 2023, The UT High School Empower Academy is a grant funded program through the Texas Workforce Commission currently serving 140 students, ages 21 and older, who have returned to school to complete their high school diploma program or successfully pass the GED. It’s free for those who qualify, and Paula added, “Enrolling was easy, and they loaned me a computer to complete my online courses.”
“There was a learning curve,” Paula admitted. “But the teacher was very helpful, describing the assignments in full detail and offering encouragement.” Paula dedicated about an hour a day to her studies, pushing herself to stay ahead.
As the first graduate of the UT High School Empower Academy, Paula wants others to know: “You are never too old to accomplish something. I’ve struggled with low self-esteem and confidence, but now that I have my diploma, there is a plethora of opportunities for me.”
“Graduating this program shows my grandkids that their grandma kept going despite every obstacle. I want them to do the same.”
“We’re so proud of Paula for having the courage and tenacity to come back and finish high school.” said Dan Diehl, Principal of UT High School. “She is a great example that it is never too late to go back and finish your high school diploma. The UT High School Empower Academy is thrilled that Paula chose our program and she will be an example for many future students for years to come.”
Congratulations Paula as you move on to the next goal in your life!
