Frequently Asked Questions
How does online learning work?
Our courses are delivered through Canvas, a user-friendly learning management system that is used by colleges, universities and corporations worldwide. It is the same system that the University of Texas students use. You'll complete assignments, interact with instructors, and take exams online.
Courses are self-paced, meaning you can work on them when it fits your schedule, but all work must be completed by deadlines that are given for each program. Courses must be completed within 140 days and a one-time 30-day extension can be purchased.
Will my credits transfer?
Yes! UTHS is fully accredited, so credits earned through our programs are transferable to other accredited schools. If you're taking courses to supplement another school program, we recommend confirming with your home school's counselor before enrolling. UTHS students take the Texas STAAR exams just like other Texas public school students.
Is this considered homeschooling?
UTHS is an accredited public school district with the Texas Education Agency. Students enrolled in our full-time diploma programs are considered public school students and not homeschooled students. However, many homeschooled students do take UTHS independent learner courses to supplement their homeschool program.
What technology do I need?
You'll need to provide your own personal device with reliable internet access, a webcam, and a microphone. UTHS does not provide electronic equipment to students and families. Most courses can be completed using a standard web browser. Some courses may require additional software or materials, which will be specified in the course description. See the Computer Requirements page for more info.
How much time will I need to commit each week?
Most students spend 5-7 hours per week per course. Full-time students typically take 6-7 courses per semester, requiring approximately 30-40 hours weekly of focused study time.
What are the criteria for military-connected students?
UTHS allows military-connected students in grades 9-12 to continue their Texas public school education remotely in an online high school after an active military parent transfers or deploys and the student must move out of Texas. For more information, please visit Military Connected Students
What Dual Credit options are available for students?
Dual credit options are available exclusively to diploma program students. Through The University of Texas On-Ramps and McMurray University, eligible students can earn both high school and college credit simultaneously. Students must receive their counselor's approval and take the Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA). Visit Dual Credit for more information.
How many independent learner courses can a student take in the summer?
In most cases students are able to complete two semester courses (i.e. Algebra IA and Algebra IB) over the summer. Students should purchase one course and then purchase the second course after completing the first course. For more information, visit Independent Courses.
If my child is still enrolled in a Texas public school do I need to un-enroll them first and get the transcript that way?
You must provide transcripts from your child's current school. The transcripts are not available through the family portal at Texas Education Agency. Once your child has been accepted into the UTHS Texas diploma program, then submit a withdrawal form so their records can be shared with UTHS.
What is required for homeschooled students to enroll in UT High School?
Homeschooled students need to provide prior school records, including transcripts. Records must be from an accredited school or program. Students without accredited records will be required to establish academic proficiency in math, science, English, and social studies through Credit by Exam.
When enrolling in our Texas Diploma Program, you'll need to submit:
- Prior school records/transcripts showing official final grades for any high school credits
- For entering 9th graders, 8th-grade transcripts demonstrating successful completion of 8th grade
- Any documentation for special services (like special education or 504 accommodations)
These records are part of the required documentation during the application process, along with proof of Texas residency, immunization records, and other items.
All students, including those previously homeschooled, must meet the eligibility requirements, which include having completed 8th-grade coursework (or equivalent credit by examination).
